From this related thread about a similar brew link issue with nmap: I'd wiped /usr/local/ before installing brew, so was unsure about this. Realised that MacTeX installs its stuff in there too by default, causing this issue. Apparently some software will write to that folder using root privileges on install so there is an ownership issue here. To fix:

Improve this question. While installing tig, HomeBrew is displaying the following issues while installing a dependency: Error: The `brew link` step did not complete successfully The formula built, but is not symlinked into /usr/local Could not symlink bin/a2x /usr/local/bin is not writable. You can try again using: brew link asciidoc. homebrew.

You can unlink it: brew unlink gcc To force the link and overwrite all conflicting files: brew link --overwrite glibc To list all files that would be deleted: brew link --overwrite --dry-run glibc

A package manager takes all that headache away. If you use Brew, or MacPorts, or aptitude on Ubuntu or rpm on other distributions, you need only tell it to install nmap (e.g., `x:~ $ brew install nmap`. If you don’t have the right compiler, the package manager will get that for you or tell you how to get it.

You can also get nmap for Mac as a disk image in a self contained binary if you’d rather not deal with home-brew, but again, we’re talking about homebrew here. Oh and if the concept of nmap appeals to you but the command line is far over your head or too cumbersome, then you can use Network Utility on Mac OS to perform port scans , finger, whois, trace route, ping , and much more, all from a friendlier GUI app.

nieder commented on Sep 26, 2013. Removing #include from src/ec_send.c:25 does get rid of the bpf redefinitions in 0.8.0. However the build fails later linking libettercap.dylib with _safe_free_mem being undefined. I can file a new issue for that. The safe_free_mem symbol error is now filed as issue #344.

By using an installation monitor when you install a free trial, you can get an exact catalog of what it installs. When the trial ends, you can delete every trace of that program and reinstall it, as there will be no markers left behind to tell it you’ve had the free trial before.
