The "Word of Wisdom" actually doesn't mention coffee by name. Instead, it talks generally about avoiding "hot drinks." Mild barley drinks = beer and is fine. Grain and fruits are good; meat should be eaten sparingly. I interpret “hot drinks” as originally referring to temperature (presumably based on some sort of Thompsonian medicine concept or something), with caffeine eventually becoming a post hoc rationalization. For its time, pretty good advice.

There is a simple reason why Mormons don’t drink coffee: We believe the prophet Joseph Smith received revelation from God commanding the church to follow a specific diet. We believe that God blesses us with health and other spiritual blessings for following this commandment. This is not unusual when you think about it.
