Aldehydes and ketones have lower boiling points compared to alcohols of similar size. Do aldehydes have a higher boiling point than alcohol? The polar carbon-to-oxygen double bond causes aldehydes and ketones to have higher boiling points than those of ethers and alkanes of similar molar masses but lower than those of comparable alcohols that engage in intermolecular hydrogen bonding.

Why alcohol has higher boiling point than aldehyde? Alcohols have higher boiling points than aldehydes and ketones of similar molecular weight. Thus, the dipole–dipole attractive forces of carbonyl compounds are weaker than hydrogen-bonding interactions between alcohol molecules.

For aldehydes and ketones of similar molecular masses, ketones have a higher boiling point. This is due to the fact that the carbonyl group is more polar in ketones, and therefore has stronger electrostatic attraction to the other molecules than that between aldehyde molecules.

Trevor Ryan. Dec 30, 2015. Due to presence of strong hydrogen bonds as the intermolecular forces holding the alcohol molecules together so more energy required to break them so hence a higher melting and boiling points. Answer link.

Assuming similar lengths of carbon chains of each, alcohol will have the highest boiling point due to presence of strong hydrogen bonds as intermolecular forces holding particles together.

However, the aldehyde's boiling point isn't as high as the alcohol's. In the alcohol, there is hydrogen bonding as well as the other two kinds of intermolecular attraction. Although the aldehydes and ketones are highly polar molecules, they don't have any hydrogen atoms attached directly to the oxygen, and so they can't hydrogen bond with each other.

Carboxylic acids have higher boiling points than aldehydes, ketones, and given alcohol of comparable molecular mass. This is because of formation of intermolecular H -bonding. Answer verified by Toppr Upvote (0)

Amongst aldehydes and ketones, ketones have higher boiling point. This is due to the presence of two electron donating alkyl groups around the $\ce{C=O}$ group which makes them more polar. For example: the boiling point of $\ce{CH3-CHO}$ is 322 K and dipole moment is 2.52 D. Boiling point of $\ce{CH3-CO-CH3}$ is 329 K and dipole moment is 2.88D

(4) KETONE and (5) ALDEHYDE: A comparison of the boiling points of aldehyde and ketone with the corresponding alcohol shows that the alcohol is more polar due to its ability to hydrogen bond. Since ketones and aldehydes lack hydroxyl groups, they are incapable of intermolecular hydrogen bonds. But due to the presence of

The polar carbon-to-oxygen double bond causes aldehydes and ketones to have higher boiling points than those of ethers and alkanes of similar molar masses but lower than those of comparable alcohols that engage in intermolecular hydrogen bonding. Aldehydes are readily oxidized to carboxylic acids, whereas ketones resist oxidation.
