In Scotland you used to have to wait until 12.30pm on Sundays before buying alcohol, rather than 10am for the rest of the week. Now it's in line with England and Wales which is 10am.

In England and Wales, thanks to the Licensing Act 2003 (the law which introduced 24 hour drinking) shops can sell alcohol 24 hours if they have been granted a licence allowing them to do so. In Scotland, alcohol is not sold in shops from 10pm at night until 10am the next morning (though some stores may have further restrictions).

My local store used to stop selling at 11pm until 8pm except in build up to Christmas, since new manager has taken over they sell it all the time. You are best off giving them a ring and asking. If you find you are drinking too much give this number a call. 0845 769 7555

That means you have until 9pm the night before the holidays (apart from Sunday) to buy liquor. Luckily, wine and beer are sold in grocery stores so if you miss out on the liquor you can still get some fabulous craft beer .

Though it depends on the specific license, you can expect alcohol to generally be served from just before midday to just before midnight. Alcohol sales in shops in the Republic of Ireland are legal only between 10.30 am and 10.00 pm on weekdays, and from 12.30 pm to 10.00 pm on Sundays.

On New Year's Eve, all licensees are permitted to sell or supply liquor until 2am on New Year's Day. This applies regardless of your regular approved trading hours. This means that the bar must finish serving at 2am, unless the premises is currently approved to trade beyond 2am.
