Beer is also most likely the oldest alcoholic drink in history. A standard beer, whether it be a lager or an ale, has between 4% to 6% ABV, although some beers have higher or lower concentrations of alcohol.

Wines are generally 10% to 20% alcohol, meaning about 80 to 90% is water. Hard spirits (vodka, whiskeys etc) tend to be 40 to 60% alcohol (most down around 40) with 40 to 60% being water. A high percentage of water does not make something safe or healthy.

Grand Marnier and Cointreau are both bottled at 40 percent ABV (80 proof). Both of these top-shelf liqueurs have the same alcohol content as most of the rums and tequilas that they are often mixed with. Therefore, a margarita made with Cointreau will naturally be stronger than one made with the average triple sec.
