Frey has been making organic wine without sulfites for 30 years. All their wines are sulfur free and they approach winemaking ‘sans sulfites’ with an almost misisonary zeal! Frey’s philosophy is that with healthy organic fruit and careful winemaking there is no need for sulfur.

The short answer is that organic wine does contain sulfites, though at different levels in the U.S. versus Europe/Canada. The best course of action is if you are sensitive to sulfites is to choose an organic wine or wine made with organically grown grapes and enjoy in moderation.

So, while it’s impossible to buy wine that’s totally sulfite-free, low-sulfite wines do exist. If you’d like to avoid them as much as possible, look for bottles that say “no sulfites added” on the label, or hunt down organic wines, which are required to be made from organically-grown grapes and contain no added sulfites.

Whilst no sulphites will have been added to organic wine, they can still contain between 10-40ppm of naturally occurring sulphites. But that is nothing in comparison to standard wine, as the EU allows up to 220ppm sulphites per bottle of wine, and the kicker is, you don’t know which wine contains what volumes of sulphites.
