The 2018 OANZ market report found that the New Zealand organic sector grew 30% in three years, reaching a value of $600 million per year in 2018. September will see an extra focus on the organic movement with New Zealand’s Organic Week celebrated from 5 - 13 September and Organic Wine Week 21 – 27 September.

Organic Winegrowers New Zealand (OWNZ) is a grower-led organisation dedicated to supporting organic winegrowing. Our members are passionate about sharing their love of organic and biodynamic wine. In overall terms, just 4.6% of all New Zealand vineyard land (which was 37,969ha in 2018) is certified organic, though in some smaller regions with a greater leaning towards artisan production, the proportions are higher: 16.7% organic in Central Otago, 8.9% in Nelson, 7.9% in North Canterbury and 7.4% in Wairarapa, for instance.

In the last three years, the total land area of New Zealand’s organic vineyards has tripled – from about 600 hectares in 2008 to nearly 1800 hectares in 2011. If OWNZ has its way, that number will keep on growing. The group aims to see at least 20% of New Zealand grapevines under organic management by 2020.
