Wine Pairing: 2018 Juan Gil Jumilla. Jumilla is a Spanish wine found in the region of Murcia where the Monastrell grape (also known as Mourvedre in France and other parts of the world) grows. Monastrell is a thick-skinned low yielding berry with notes of juicy dark cherry, blackberry, smoke, and leather.

Inky purple in color. The nose has dusty dark cherries, plums and chocolate and spice. On the palate this is jammy with a lot of fruit. Dark cherries and black raspberries. Some spice showing. It is really all about sweet fruit right now. Delicious and enjoyable. Not the best food pairing but great on its own.

Jumilla is a wine DO title of Murcia, a small region on the Mediterranean coast of southeastern Spain. The Jumilla viticultural area, which is sandwiched between Yecla in the north and Bullas in the south, is considered to be Murcia's most important in terms of quantity and quality. It is also the region's oldest, established in 1966.

Sipped alongside these rich, sweet and savoury ingredients (there was also a slice of aged sirloin) the Jumilla kicked beautifully into touch. Given the other good matches which you’ll find on the site, it suggests that ox cheek (or tail for that matter) is the perfect match for the strong sweet reds that are so popular right now.

The nose has black raspberries, dust, blueberries and vanilla. On the palate, this is slightly sweet/rip with black raspberries, slight blueberries and char. This is also delicious. It drinks great on its own and will work with ribs or burgers.

The Jumilla DO in Murcia, near Alicante, allows the use of Garnacha, Tempranillo, and Mourvedre (called Monastrell in Spain); it has long been an area of great potential, and the winemakers here have begun applying modern craft to creating more dynamic wines than they have in the past.
