Instacart delivers alcohol for select retailers and markets. You can check availability in your area with the Instacart app or website. Some legal restrictions apply to alcohol orders— Customers must be 21 or older to order alcohol items and provide an approved photo ID showing their birthdate at delivery. We can’t add alcohol special requests.

Instacart does currently deliver alcohol in 14 states, both from grocery stores, where allowed, but some liquor stores too. Beer, wine, & liquor are available in those areas, but recipients must show ID & cannot be visibly intoxicated. Instacart also cannot leave alcohol unattended; you must be present for delivery.

To purchase alcohol through Instacart, similar to purchasing groceries and other household essentials, customers go online to https://www.instacart.com or open the Instacart mobile app, select their city and store, and search for beer, wine or spirits to add to their virtual basket. Customers ordering alcohol via Instacart must be over the age of 21 and are required to present a valid government ID at the time of delivery.

I’ve received an email from Instacart stating that alcohol can now be delivered in a contactless way, but we see no option to make this happen. We live in California if that is relevant. If anyone could provide more info I’d really appreciate it. 32 comments

Alcohol delivery is good news for Instacart contractors because it will increase their volume of work and it will mean many less dropping items off at doorsteps for no tip. Delivering groceries to a human being versus a front stoop is much nicer, and it allows the contractor to increase their earnings. It’s also going to cause problems.

For now, cigarettes are not delivered via the Instacart platform. This is not meant to punish cigarette smokers in any way. There are a few other items, such as alcohol, that they didn’t use to deliver either. But now they do deliver alcohol in 14 states, so tobacco products could be next!
