We cannot put any alcohol on our expense accounts and we cannot apply for reimbursement for any alcoholic beverages. My question is, if I have an occasional glass of wine for dinner, can I deduct that on my taxes as travel costs? Taxgirl says: I say yes, assuming that you otherwise meet the criteria for deducting your meals.

The short answer is yes, alcohol is a reimbursable business expense, per the IRS. According to Publication 463 by the IRS, a business-related meal expense “include (s) amounts spent for food, beverages, taxes, and related tips.”

All alcoholic beverages are taxed at 20%, regardless of their type or proportion of alcohol (beer, wine, cider, etc.). I have worked for many large organisations sho themselves maintain certain rules regarding meal and subsistence expenses. They might, for example, rule that a person can claim a meal and one drink. They might even impose spending limits on the mean and/or drink. I think, from an HMRC viewpoint, that the claim must be deemed reasonable.
