There are three golden rules for what we accept as a valid business deduction: The expense must have been for your business, not for private use. If the expense is for a mix of business and private use, you can only claim the portion that is used for your business. You must have records to prove it.

Provided it uses a company or trust, a business can often claim a tax deduction for meals that are eaten at work. Just make sure you eat your meal on site and do not serve alcohol with the meal.

The cost is tax deductible, a GST credit can be claimed, and is exempt from FBT up to the $300 limit. Non-entertainment gifts given to clients and suppliers do not fall within the FBT rules as they are not considered your staff. Generally, a tax deduction and GST credit can still be claimed provided they are not excessive or overly valuable.
