If what you refer to as a “vanilla” card is sold at Walmart, you can buy it with a Walmart gift card. For example they sell Visa $25 gift cards; you can pay for it with a Walmart gift card as long as it has enough money on it to cover the face value, plus the charge and taxes for the Visa card.

You can buy anything with them, including alcohol and cigarettes. In some cases, I’d prefer that the gift card worked like food stamps. I want it to only be able to buy food. Are there stores which do something like that? In some cases I want to help someone be able to buy food, but don’t want them to be able to buy alcohol or cigarettes.

If you are the (un)lucky recipient of an eBay gift card, you can look forward to a hassle-filled redemption process governed by the kind of ultra-controlling rules for which eBay has become (in)famous. The maximum value of an eBay gift card is $200, and the total amount of gift card credit that can be redeemed in a single purchase is $1,000. Why?

You could lower your cost marginally by combining two gift cards for a $999.30 MO (max that WM allows). Mine lets me pay for one order with two gift cards. One vanilla is usually cheaper for purchase fees if you can find it (4.95). Works out to 56 cpm which is not ideal but not too bad. Reply
