It's illegal to sell alcohol to anyone under age 21, including adults… Michigan alcohol laws prohibit alcohol sales after 9 p.m. on December 24 and all of Christmas day. However, on-premise sales on January 1 are legal until 4 a.m. Grocery and convenience stores may sell beer and wine.

For example, a bar is not supposed to sell someone alcohol on their 21st birthday at midnight, because the business date of the bar (even though they are open past midnight) is still technically the date before midnight hit. This could also be true for what you describe.

Because drinking laws are based on the state and local governments, which have varying approaches. In some places you can’t buy alcohol at all, ever, while in others you can drink at any age if you’re with a legal guardian. Any state could make the drinking age 18 or 19 again if they wanted, but then they’d have shitty roads.

The sideways license is to tell bar staff to look closely at the birth date of a younger person; it does not mean they can't serve you. Obviously, nobody can get a new horizontal ID until after their 21st birthday and it would be unreasonable to expect them to do it on their birthday so they can order a drink. You shouldn't have any problem ordering drinks with your vertical ID starting at midnight on your 21st birthday. Have fun and be careful!
