Under the Liquor Control Code and administrative rules, the legal hours for selling alcohol in Michigan on Christmas Day and New Year's Eve differ from the legal hours the rest of the year: Christmas Day - MCL 436.2113(5) prohibits licensees from selling alcoholic liquor between 11:59 P.M. on December 24 and 12:00 Noon on December 25.

Michigan alcohol laws prohibit alcohol sales after 9 p.m. on December 24 and all of Christmas day. However, on-premise sales on January 1 are legal until 4 a.m. Grocery and convenience stores may sell beer and wine. But gas stations in Wayne County County may not.

At least Christmas and New Year’s don’t fall on Sundays—the state also maintains a wacky rule that bans alcohol sales on the Monday following a Sunday Christmas and New Year’s. Still, state law requires retail alcohol stores close up on or before 6pm on Sundays so, keep that in mind.

Michigan: Last year, Michigan undid the state ban on Christmas day alcohol sales but many municipalities, such as Flint, chose to maintain the ban. Minnesota prohibits off-premise sales of alcohol on Sunday and Christmas. Mississippi has a number of dry counties and many wet counties prohibit Sunday sales.
